Wasps & Hornets

Few insects strike more fear into the hearts of people than Wasps.  There are actually many different species of Wasp, but here in the British Isles there is only a handful that is actually a pest.  Wasps do serve a valuable purpose though, they are in fact Nature’s very own little pest controllers.  They eat other garden insects such as caterpillars, aphids and the like so are really good for your garden.  More often than not, you won’t actually find the nest, just more wasps than normal in a certain room or area or a number of wasps flying in and out of a gap or hole on a building. 

However, when a nest is advertently discovered they can be quite dangerous. If the nest is accidentally damaged or you get too close then the wasps will release a pheromone that will aggravate other wasps in the nest and lead to them defending their home. This is where the trouble starts.

Squirrels

Grey Squirrels

Grey squirrels are an invasive species in Britain originating from North America and were introduced to Great Britain in 1876. They have since spread across the country and largely displaced the native Red Squirrel. Like other rodents their teeth never stop growing which means that they also need to gnaw. This can lead to damaged soffits, gutters, telephone lines, cables and property. They can make their home in trees, woodland or even roof space. They tend to eat leaves, nuts, roots, seeds and other plants and are known for burying acorns. The only trouble is that they frequently fail to return for the buried acorns which leads to new oak trees popping up all over the place.

Silverfish thrive in cold, damp conditions so the key here is to identify the cause of the cold/damp through a thorough inspection before a treatment is carried out. We have thermal imaging and the required experience to know what to look for and where to look for it in order to bring a successful conclusion to a silverfish infestation.

Rats

Not a lot of creatures in the world inspire more dread than the rat. It has been a symbol of death and pestilence for quite a considerate amount of time. They haunt our nightmares and scuttle about in our walls. These creatures cause billions of pounds in damage every year. Spoiling food supplies, gnawing through electrical cables, biting babies and small children and much more.

The larger rats can weigh in excess of 2lbs. These carry many diseases including Weil’s disease and Salmonella which both can be fatal. Rat’s teeth are harder than iron or steel and can easily gnaw through materials such as breezeblock and wood. Their teeth never stop growing. As a result they have to gnaw constantly.

A mating pair of rats can have 5 litters of roughly 7-15 pups in a year. A female rat can mate as much as 500 times with different rats in a 6 hour period and are sexually active at 3-4 months old. These figures mean that it doesn’t take long for a couple of rats to become a few and a few to become a lot.

Rabbits

Rabbits are very social animals that enjoy the company of other rabbits. They also love to dig. The combination of these two facts leads to many a destroyed field, lawn or garden. They can produce a litter of between 4 and 12 offspring every 30-35 days.

They have excellent senses of smell, hearing and vision. They have nearly 360° panoramic vision, allowing them to detect predators from all directions. They can see everything behind them and only have a small blind-spot in front of their nose. Rabbits are territorial animals which live in loosely organised social groups. They live in warrens comprising of an intricate series of underground tunnels with different entrances and exits.

Moths

There are many species of Moth that you may find present and depending upon their species they may be doing damage to various items. Be it Carpet moths damaging carpets, Clothes moths eating holes in your favourite jumpers or Meal moths eating their way through your cereal cupboard…… we have the knowledge and equipment to be able to deal with Moth infestations effectively and in many cases by using naturally occurring hormones to confuse the moth, preventing them from mating meaning an insecticide-free (meaning no risk to Historic collections, artefacts etc), natural end to the infestation. We also have access to Entomologists to confirm species if we are uncertain meaning a successful eradication is within reach.

Moles

While few of us will have seen a mole, many of us will be familiar with the damage that they can do. Unsightly Molehills are a sure sign of moles being present and unfortunately they don’t tend to leave of their own accord. Another problem presented by moles is Listeriosis which is a disease that can have catastrophic effects on both domestic and farm animals not to mention us humans.
